Day One
The troops have set off. After an early start this morning, the crew, bags packed jumped in 4x4's to make their way to the checking point to start their hike. With only 2 hours of walking today, the crew were in good spirits to get started and start the epic trip. Yesterday was spent visiting the local town and one of the schools and getting used to their *one in a lifetime* surrondings.
Today the group will arrive to Mti Mkumbwa which is 2 hours walking time from camp. I think tomorrow truly is the long day and today could be described as the "warm up" as tomorrow they start a 6 hour walk and gain 719 m in altitude but will start to appreciate the amazing views!

I think it is important to remember that this is very much a trip to remember two important men, Paul and Tom and to give back to the royal marines charitable trust for all their support to both girls.
Keep supporting and hopefully we will hear from them all again once they are in reception areas!

They have arrived !!!!
After three flights and 13 hours of travelling, the team have arrived..
The team are getting used to the remote surrondings of the camp and are currently preparing to start their walk at the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Around camp the mood is very much of excitement and they took one advantage of having a beer ( attached) the last one they will have for 10 days!!
Kit is being checked and notes discovered from friends and family that are left at home so I know that the mood is very positive, excited and all cannot wait to get started ! Although, we have not had an update on how well they all slept!

Last minute packing!
I don't know about everyone else but it would appear that I am very much a last minute packer!! In my defence I have been trying to squeeze in some quality summer holiday fun with my boys but now starts the mild panic of last minute preparation...
So far I have merely been chucking stuff in my bag as and when I bought/collected it but now that we only have one more sleep til departure it is time to thoroughly go through the checklist and pack it all properly!
Sleeping bag, boots, socks and coat are the important items- check. Bug repellent, sun cream, malaria tabs and talc also packed.. Wash kit (non-fragranced so as not to attract unwanted creepy crawlies!) thermals.. The list goes on! Flight booking ref, insurance, passport: check check check..
Strange feeling of apprehension/nerves/excitement setting in!

3 Days to go and counting ................... what should they expect?!?
With 3 days to go ... kit is being packed , anti altitude tablets bought and sleeping bags are being stuffed into already filled bags!! I am sure most people, like me, are thinking are these 10 close friends of mine mad?!??
This trip has been highly spoken about in recent months and the embankment of the plane is becoming ever closer. So far the guys have raised over £9,500 for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and with £270 to go until the money target is reached the guys have absolutely exceed all expectations and I am sure there will be more money to come….
Kilimanjaro is no “walk in the park” and with many of the group they are not enthusiastic hikers so this is truly a trip whereby they will have to dig deep and club together to complete this huge mountain!! With the inspiration of a dear friend who sadly we lost in 2011 while serving our country, this will be an emotional and rewarding experience.
Kilimanjaro is quickly approaching them all and with temperatures at the peak being 0 degrees with winds blowing , I wish you all the best of luck!!!!
In the interim, can I ask for everyone’s help to add your email addresses to this link. If the guys win , the company will give them 5K towards their target …. Your help is massively appreciate and goes to a very worthy cause!

Em's story
So we have just one week to go until we meet up at Heathrow airport to start our epic adventure to Africa - a continent that played a huge part in making my husband Tomasz the man he was.. Tom spent two years travelling through and working in Africa before we met at Swansea University in 2004; he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 1999. Now I am going to follow in his footsteps to see what all the fuss was about!
I, however, am not going alone - I will be with a whole team of our friends, to experience this amazing challenge together. We are also joined by an inspirational and strong young woman, Sian, whose fiance Paul Woodland (also a Royal Marine) died in October 2012. So with Tom and Woody in mind, we are a team on a mission to achieve something in their name; something to be proud of, just as we are of them.
We have had an overwhelming amount of support from both people we know and from complete strangers over this past year. Having spent so much time planning, training and fundraising for this 8 day trek up the Lemosho route on Kili, the start is nearly upon us and we are raring to go! Please keep sharing the story as every message of support we get really does give a huge morale boost and makes us even more determined to succeed.
